The updated Perusall integration meets a higher industry standard for security and privacy (new LTI 1.3 vs old 1.1 standard). Perusall has also made some improvements to the Canvas course roster, groups, and grade syncing functionality. Instructors can also pull Canvas files and pages directly into their Perusall course.
No, Perusall 1.3 is already installed and available in all academic Canvas course sites. If you previously used Perusall 1.1 in your course, the Perusall 1.1 integration should have been removed from your course to avoid issues. Please contact the OSU Learning Platform Services team if you are running into issues or are seeing Perusall without the 1.3 label.
Yes, your Perusall account will contain all your Perusall courses regardless of whether they were created through Perusall 1.1 or Perusall 1.3. In Perusall, you can import assignments from one Perusall course to another Perusall course.
There are two ways to create a Perusall assignment and link it to Canvas. Which way you choose may depend on what you have already set up in the Canvas course.
Perusall setting requirement for this method: Settings > Scoring > LMS grade sync > LMS gradebook column management > Perusall creates gradebook columns in LMS for each Perusall assignment automatically
This method is recommended if you’re creating new content and want all of your Perusall assignments to appear in the Canvas gradebook.
When enabled, the “Perusall creates gradebook columns in LMS for each Perusall assignment automatically” setting will automatically create the linked Canvas assignment when you create an assignment in Perusall. The Canvas assignment will have the same assignment name, due date and time, and point value as set in Perusall.
Perusall setting requirement for this method: Settings > Scoring > LMS grade sync > LMS gradebook column management > Instructor creates deep links in LMS; no Perusall gradebook columns will appear in LMS until deep links have been created
This method is ideal when you transition old Canvas assignments from Perusall 1.1 to Perusall 1.3, and/or if you only want some of your Perusall assignments to appear in Canvas.
When enabled, you will manually create an assignment in Canvas and do the following:
After clicking Save in Canvas, the Canvas assignment name and points will automatically update to match the Perusall assignment name and points.
If you’ve already set up and linked your Canvas and Perusall courses, you’ll need to take the following steps. Please reach out to the OSU Canvas team if you would like help with these steps.
*Use our "Couldn't find valid settings for this assignment" help article if you see this message after clicking on the Canvas assignment.
Your students will access Perusall through the Canvas assignments you’ve linked with your Perusall 1.3 course. You can also publish the Perusall 1.3 module link if you would like.
When you use the Perusall 1.3 integration, you can customize both how and when grades are synced to your LMS. Please review Perusall Grade Sync documentation for more details.
Please email the OSU Learning Platform Services team with any questions or issues!
