The legacy Turnitin LTI tool was replaced with the new Turnitin integration through the Canvas Plagiarism Framework functionality several years ago. The two integrations have been running side-by-side in Canvas to allow faculty time to transition their assignments from the legacy tool to the new Turnitin integration.

At the end of Spring 2022, the legacy Turnitin LTI tool will be removed from Canvas. Any assignments that are configured to use the legacy Turnitin LTI tool will break when the tool is removed from Canvas.

  • How do I know if my assignment is configured to use the legacy Turnitin LTI tool?
Any Canvas assignment that is set up as an External Tool assignment with the tool named "DO NOT USE - TII" or with an External Tool URL that starts with https://api.turnitin.com/ is configured to use the legacy Turnitin LTI tool.
  • How can I update my assignment so that it is using the new Turnitin integration through the Canvas Plagiarism Framework?
You can use instructions provided in our Using Turnitin in Canvas article to edit the assignment.
  • What will happen to student access to their submissions and Turnitin reports on past assignments configured with the legacy Turnitin LTI?
Students will lose all access to their submission and related Turnitin reports on past assignments configured with the legacy Turnitin LTI.
  • What will happen to instructor access to student submissions and Turnitin reports on past assignments configured with the legacy Turnitin LTI?
Instructors will lose access to these submissions and related Turnitin reports through Canvas. Instructors can access these submissions and reports by logging in to Turnitin directly. Please contact the OSU Canvas team if this is necessary.
  • I forgot to update my Canvas assignment that was configured to use the legacy Turnitin LTI and now I can't edit the Canvas assignment to make changes. What can I do?
To edit these assignments, you will need to copy the URL of the assignment and append "/edit" (without the quotes) to the assignment URL in the browser address bar. Please contact the OSU Canvas team for help with this.
