Minutes/Notes

Gradescope

A one-year contract was finalized in early October, and integrated with Canvas on October 24. In September, Gradescope was purchased by Turnitin. Not clear what the impact will be if OSU decides to pursue a longer-term contract going forward. The Canvas team is partnering with Math and Engineering instructors to raise faculty awareness about Gradescope and how it can be used.

  • Difference between Peerceptiv and Gradescope? Peerceptiv is a peer assessment tool that allows an instructor to set up a rubric that students use to anonymously review other students’ written work (typically in large-enrollment courses). The system uses rubrics and algorithms to evaluate the quality of students’ feedback. Peerceptiv has been used by some Ecampus courses; Ecampus is interested in finding a larger body of instructors to use the system, and see if a site license would be feasible.

Posting alerts on Canvas (can be targeted to students/instructors)

The Canvas team periodically receives requests to post global announcements on the Canvas home page to students, e.g., reminders to vote, and alerts about Meningococcal B vaccine requirements. We currently have no guidelines for approving/declining requests. Concern is that too many or total lack of announcements, and people will ignore them.

  • Latest request is that links to Nat’l Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) will be sent to specific student populations in spring 2019; surveys are unique, depending on student status. Link + info would be sent to student Inbox, not posted on Canvas. So this one’s a bit different. Because of high-profile nature of the survey and desire to maximize participation, we will plan to do this.
  • Canvas announcements can be colored blue (information), yellow (warning) or red (alert). Canvas admin has occasionally posted yellow warning to faculty if specific tool is offline, or if there’s a change to an existing tool.
  • Canvas team would like to post a blue faculty announcement for a few days at beginning of fall term with link to updates, new features, and training material
  • We do not recommend posting security alerts (campus safety already has a location-specific notification system, though it’s not mandatory) or campus closure announcements on Canvas (due to multiple locations).
  • Committee asked how to coordinate alerts that are going out to students from different units; suggested that postings focus on academic information.
  • Registrar’s office asked if Banner outage should be posted (e.g., if final grades are due), and/or links to instructions/training on submitting final grades
  • Announcement to students that library is open extra hours? Would only apply to Corvallis students
  • OSU portal already provides a place for announcements for students
  • Web and mobile team developing ways to push announcement to app

Annual report of the Learn@OregonState advisory committee

Lynn is working on a summary for the past year (Sept. 2017-Sept. 2018), and will post it soon.

Update on Bridge and Critical Training

Academic Technology has hired a Bridge product manager; she will start in late November. o No new trainings will be rolled out to OSU employees in Bridge until January 2019

Canvas and Catalog

College of Business will be the first users of a new instance of Canvas and a product called Catalog that’s used as a marketplace for users to browse, purchase, and enroll in noncredit training. Some OSU students may use the platform for non-credit badges/training. Other departments may also use the platform, once processes and procedures are established.

New Analytics in Canvas

Analytics Beta is now available in Canvas; instructors need to enable the course menu link; it’s not visible/available to students. o Analytics Beta offers a more comprehensive look at all grades in a course, with options to filter, download, and message students. See Guides for details.

  • Canvas Course Analytics is still available via the Home page

Update on Top Hat

Support tickets to the OSU Classroom Response team are down, compared to prior numbers for Turning.

  • F2018 student purchases of Top Hat licenses: 429 single-term; 4,337 one-year; 1,537 4+ year
