Minutes/Notes
Top Hat adoption
Implementation is going well
-
This year Academic Technology subsidized student licenses; funding for a subsidy in the 2019-20 academic year is not guaranteed. If no subsidy, students would pay a bit more for Top hat licenses next year.
-
Optimum solution is to centrally fund the entire contract – this would eliminate cost to students, and would help drive adoption. But current budgetary issues make that unlikely
-
Lynn has not yet done analysis on the true per-student cost of 100% central funding
Gradescope adoption
Usage has grown three-fold since signing contract and integrating with Canvas in October. Approx. 9,100 Gradescope enrollments in F2018, compared with 3,100 per year in the prior term
-
Bubble sheet functionality and pending plagiarism checking of computer code assignments have piqued faculty interest
-
Gradescope license cost could potentially be offset by reduced use of Scantron; Math department Scantron spend was ~$3,900 in F2017 compared with $530 in F2018. Other department comparisons not yet known.
-
Funding for next year’s Gradescope contract is TBD; Academic Technology exploring contract options, given acquisition of Gradescope by Turnitin, and possible Unizin interest in adding Gradescope to its suite of vendor contracts
Instructional Technology speed dating
Lynn seeking ideas on increasing faculty awareness and participation. Details: https://learn.oregonstate.edu/instructional-technology-speed-dating

March 4 is Library’s open educational resource week; ‘petting zoo’ with OER’s planned
Ecampus Syllabus pilot
Ecampus is considering piloting a syllabus management services (Simple Syllabus or Concourse); seeking feedback from the advisory committee
-
There are numerous issues managing syllabi as independent files (finding them; keeping them up to date with policy changes; sharing with prospective students both in and outside of OSU; accessibility, etc.)
-
Ecampus considering pilot of a syllabus service that would address the issues. Both vendor products offer a way to centrally update policies; course rollover; controlled display of specific syllabus details (e.g., less access to non-OSU users); easy transfer of access to different instructors; robust reporting on how syllabi are used, completion status, etc.
-
Cross-listed course options/access TBD
-
However, pilot is tricky because:
-
It would only be for Ecampus (so instructors would have different way to manage classroom-based vs. online courses).
-
Scope and complexity of pilot and possible implementation are not trivial
-
If they moved ahead with a vendor but decided at a later date to change, accessing/retrieving our content may be difficult
Canvas Quizzes.next
New quizzing engine, now available as “beta” option
-
May now be enabled in Studio sites as a feature option; once enabled, users will see new option when creating an Assignment
-
We had been waiting for a couple of key developments in order to begin testing
-
Q: do they work with Outcomes? A: Yes; an individual question can be associated with an Outcome, which is an improvement over Canvas’s current quizzing tool.
-
At some point the current Canvas quiz platform will be removed and everything will have to transition to Quizzes.Next; we don’t know the timing
Update on Canvas Outcomes
Science is creating professional development modules with micro-credentials; they will be embedded in specific courses (hybrid or classroom-based).
-
Outcomes will be attached to key assignments to test efficacy of the learning modules
-
Tamara Mitchell working with Tasha to understand how Outcomes work; her team will create master assignments tied to Outcomes that can be copied to multiple courses
-
Science faculty will have help from Tamara and team to set the assignments and Outcomes up in course sites
-
Results can be tracked at course, program and college level, although reporting is not perfect
Social logins update
“social” accounts were enabled for Studio sites in December 2017. They are intended to allow faculty/staff to collaborate with non-OSU people in Studio sites, e.g., Quality Matters external reviewers. They are also useful for testing
-
So far we have approx. 230 accounts: Facebook 17, Google Mail 185, LinkedIn 8 and Yahoo 21
Student Learning Mastery Gradebook
Now toggle-able on/off to match the (instructor) Learning Mastery Gradebook
Global Announcements policy
The advisory committee’s comments from October 2018 were helpful for the OSU Canvas team to determine what types of announcements (or alerts) should or shouldn’t be posted on Canvas
-
Alerts can be displayed for students, faculty, or all Canvas users
-
Significant changes and outages will be displayed
-
Non-Canvas campus-wide announcements will not be displayed
-
Announcements with links to faculty resources will be displayed at the beginning of academic terms
-
More details available – just let Lynn know
